Women, political participation and leadership

A New Weave of People, Power and Politics: The Action Guide for Advocacy and Participation
Lisa Veneklasen and Valerie Miller.
Published by World Neighbors

This manual presents a non-partisan political framework through which women and other marginalized groups in society can participate actively in advocating for change. Promoting a time-tested approach to citizen participation, this guide is divided into three sections, each dealing with the interconnected issues of understanding politics, planning advocacy and doing advocacy. While the first section defines core concepts like power, gender, equity, citizenship and democracy as moulds for the methodology and vision behind the approach, the second part outlines the basics of planning the approach by identifying problems, possible allies and foes, policy hooks, political angles etc. The third section details practical tools (like the use of media, mobilization, lobbying and developing advocacy leadership) for implementing the advocacy strategy arrived at through the first two sections of the book. Designed for NGOs, donor institutions, development agencies, trainers, activists and researchers dealing with power, politics and exclusion, this approach is flexible enough to allow practitioners to forge their own strategy from a combination of those presented in the manual.

AWID's Young Women & Leadership Program

Aimed at connecting young women activists and leaders, facilitating intergenerational dialogue and encouraging more women to participate in development and advocacy,  AWID's Young Women and Leadership Program provides a variety of e-resources including an email list, a leadership glossary, and an online mentorship program to connect mentors with less-experienced women leaders working in development and human rights.
